How to Prepare for This Role
The Assistant Director (Admissions) position at IST Islamabad is an EBPS-17 contract role requiring an MBA or BBA (4 years) in Marketing/Management with a first division result. No post-qualification experience is required, making this a strong entry-level management opportunity at a public sector university. Two posts are available. The selection involves a practical test and/or interview at IST Islamabad campus. The four areas below outline what the panel will assess most closely.
Your MBA or BBA (4 years) degree must have a major/specialization in Marketing or Management from an HEC recognized university and must be in 1st division (minimum 60% in annual system or CGPA 2.5/4.0 in semester system). No post-qualification experience is required for this post. The panel will focus heavily on your academic record. Ensure your mark sheets from matric to your final degree show first class in the final degree, only one second class across all levels, and no third division at any stage. Bring originals and attested photocopies of all mark sheets from matric onwards, your degree, and your detailed transcript. If your degree mentions a dual specialization, confirm your transcript explicitly lists Marketing or Management as the declared major.
Prepare a clear academic summary listing each qualification, the institution, year of completion, marks/CGPA, and the division obtained. This makes it easy for the scrutiny panel to verify compliance with the one second division rule and the first class in final degree requirement.
The Admissions department manages the full applicant lifecycle at IST: prospectus preparation and distribution, application form management, eligibility verification, entry test coordination, merit list preparation, admission offer dispatch, fee collection coordination, and enrollment confirmation. The panel will assess your understanding of admissions workflows and your ability to manage a high-volume, deadline-driven process. Be ready to discuss how you would organize an admissions cycle, how you would handle merit list disputes or eligibility queries from applicants, and how you would coordinate with academic departments on program capacity. If you have any academic project, internship, or volunteer experience related to event coordination, data management, or student-facing services, describe it in this context. Familiarity with HEC admission regulations for undergraduate and postgraduate programs is an advantage.
IST is a science and technology university with competitive admissions. The panel will expect you to demonstrate knowledge of how HEC regulates merit-based admissions, how entry test scores are used in merit calculation, and how reserved seats (sports, minorities, disabled) are processed. Review HEC's admission policy for public sector universities before the interview.
The Marketing/Management specialization is relevant to how IST reaches prospective students. Be prepared to discuss how a university admissions department uses marketing tools: outreach to schools and colleges, university fairs and open days, digital marketing for program awareness, prospectus design, and applicant communication strategy. The panel may ask how you would increase application numbers for a specific program, how you would use data to identify outreach gaps, or how you would handle a drop in applications for a department. Think in terms of student recruitment as a marketing funnel and be ready to apply standard marketing concepts (segmentation, targeting, positioning) to university admissions. This theoretical grounding in your degree subject, applied directly to the admissions function, is what the panel is looking for at EBPS-17 level with no experience required.
Prepare a brief example of how you would plan an outreach campaign for IST's engineering or space science programs targeting pre-university students. The example should include target audience, channels, timeline, and expected outcome. Panel members testing fresh graduates often ask this type of applied question to assess critical thinking.
