How to Prepare for This Role
The Assistant Director / Technical Officer (Information Technology) position at IST Islamabad covers three functional areas: Software, Networks, and Systems. IST is a defense-affiliated space technology university, and the IT role here supports research computing, academic systems, and campus network infrastructure. Two posts are available at EBPS-17. Candidates must hold a BCS/BIT/BSE (4yr), MCS/MIT after a 2-year Bachelor's, or BE/BSc Engg in Computer/IT in 1st division. No post-qualification experience is required. The selection includes a practical test and/or interview at IST Islamabad campus. The four areas below cover what the panel assesses most closely.
IST accepts three degree routes for this post. The first is a BCS, BIT, BSE, or equivalent 4-year computer/IT degree in 1st division from an HEC recognized university. The second is MCS or MIT with a 2-year (not a 4-year) prior Bachelor's degree in 1st division. Note that MCS/MIT after a 4-year bachelor's is a different route and the document specifically states MCS/MIT after a 2-year bachelor's, so confirm your bachelor's duration carefully before applying via this route. The third is a BE or BSc Engineering in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Technology in 1st division. Bring originals and attested photocopies of all mark sheets from matric to your final degree. Ensure your final degree explicitly names the discipline as Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or equivalent. The practical test may include a technical written paper, so bring stationery and be ready for on-screen or paper-based technical questions.
If you hold MCS/MIT, bring the admission letter or official document confirming that your prior Bachelor's was a 2-year program, not a 4-year one. This distinction is explicitly stated in the eligibility criteria and the scrutiny panel will verify it.
This post covers three domains. For Software, the panel will assess your knowledge of software development lifecycle, programming fundamentals, database management (SQL), and web application basics. For Networks, expect questions on TCP/IP networking, LAN/WAN concepts, routing and switching fundamentals, network security basics, and structured cabling and Wi-Fi infrastructure. For Systems, be ready to discuss Windows Server and Linux server administration, Active Directory, user account management, backup and recovery procedures, and virtualization basics (VMware/Hyper-V). IST's campus serves academic and research computing needs including potentially high-security networks given its defense and space sector affiliation. Be ready to discuss university IT use cases: student information systems, ERP, LMS platforms (Moodle), email systems, and library management systems.
IST is a science and space technology institution with links to SUPARCO and the defense sector. Its IT infrastructure likely involves secure networks and research computing environments. Demonstrating awareness of IT security best practices (access control, data protection, network segmentation, patch management) will distinguish your answers from standard university IT support candidates.
University IT roles involve a significant volume of first-line and second-line support: resolving hardware and software faults, configuring workstations and laptops, managing printers, troubleshooting network connectivity, managing user accounts, and responding to help-desk tickets. The panel or practical test may assess your ability to diagnose common IT problems. Be prepared for scenario-based questions: how would you troubleshoot a campus LAN outage affecting multiple departments, how would you set up a new staff member's workstation, how would you respond to a malware incident, or how would you plan a Wi-Fi coverage extension for a new campus building. Prepare concise technical answers and demonstrate systematic troubleshooting methodology. Technical documentation skills (writing IT SOPs, network diagrams, asset inventories) are also relevant and may be tested.
Practice explaining a technical troubleshooting scenario in plain language. IST's interview panel may include senior administration officers who are not deeply technical. The ability to explain a network outage or a server failure in non-technical terms while demonstrating your diagnostic process is a valued skill in university IT roles.
Download and complete the official application form from https://ist.edu.pk/downloads?section-opportunities=§ion=career-opportunities. Send a completely filled and duly signed application form together with: a detailed updated CV, attested photocopies of all degrees/transcripts/mark sheets from matric onwards, CNIC, and a recent passport size photograph. If applying via the MCS/MIT route, include documentation confirming the 2-year nature of your prior Bachelor's program. If serving in a Govt./Semi-Govt./Autonomous body, include an NOC from your employer. Ex-Govt. officials and Ex-servicemen must include attested copies of their release/retirement order and Last Pay Certificate (LPC). Address the envelope to HR Department, Institute of Space Technology (IST), 1, Islamabad Highway, Islamabad. Mark the position applied for on the right hand side of the envelope. Applications must reach IST by 9th July 2026.
