How to Prepare for This Role
The Assistant Technical Officer (IT) / (Computer Hardware) at IST Islamabad is an EBPS-16 contract post with four qualification routes. BCS/BIT (4yr) and B.Tech (Hons) holders need no experience. B.Tech (Pass) holders need 09 years and DAE holders (with computer course) need 13 years. Maximum age is 33 years. The selection includes a practical test and/or interview at IST Islamabad campus. The four areas below reflect what the panel evaluates for this hands-on hardware and IT support role.
There are four qualification routes for this post. Route 1 (BCS/BIT 4yr or equivalent 16yr, 1st division) and Route 2 (B.Tech Hons in Electronics/Electrical/Computer Technology, 1st division) require no post-qualification experience. Route 3 (B.Tech Pass in Electronics/Electrical/Computer Technology, 1st division) requires 09 years of post-qualification experience. Route 4 (DAE 3yr in Electronics/Electrical/Computer Technology, 1st division, with an additional 1-year computer applications course) requires 13 years of post-qualification experience. Confirm that your route matches your actual qualifications before applying. For Routes 3 and 4, bring attested experience certificates covering the full required years, clearly showing the nature of IT or electronics work performed, the organization, and the dates of service. Experience must be in the relevant field.
For Route 4 (DAE + 1-year computer course), bring the certificate or transcript of the computer applications course separately from your DAE documents. The scrutiny panel will verify this as a distinct qualification component in addition to the DAE itself.
The Computer Hardware specialization covers physical IT infrastructure: desktop and laptop assembly and repair, motherboard and component-level fault diagnosis, RAM, storage drives (HDD/SSD), power supply units, display units, printers, UPS systems, and peripheral devices. The practical test and panel interview will assess your hands-on ability to diagnose hardware faults, replace components, and restore functionality. Be ready to describe how you would troubleshoot a PC that fails to POST (Power-On Self-Test), how you would diagnose a hard disk failure, how you would set up and configure a new workstation from scratch, and how you would maintain a hardware asset register. Familiarity with both Windows and Linux environments, BIOS/UEFI settings, and hardware compatibility is essential for this role.
IST is a science and space technology institution with specialized computing equipment including workstations for engineering software and research computing. Mention experience with high-specification hardware, server rack components, or specialized electronics if you have it. Demonstrating familiarity with hardware beyond standard desktops (servers, UPS, structured cabling, patch panels) is an advantage.
Candidates from the Electronics/Electrical/Computer Technology routes (B.Tech Hons, B.Tech Pass, DAE) bring circuit-level and electronics knowledge that is directly applicable to computer hardware maintenance. The panel may ask about circuit board inspection, soldering skills for component repair, oscilloscope or multimeter use for fault diagnosis, power supply testing, and structured cabling standards (EIA/TIA 568). Be ready to explain how your electronics background applies to computer hardware support at a university. For DAE route candidates especially, demonstrate that your 13 years of hands-on experience has given you practical skills that go beyond the classroom and that you have worked on IT systems rather than only general electronics.
Prepare a brief summary of the types of equipment you have maintained or repaired during your working experience. List specific hardware categories (e.g., desktop PCs, laptops, printers, UPS, switches, CCTV) and organizations. Presenting this as a structured experience summary at the start of the interview is more effective than describing it verbally in response to each question.
