How to Prepare for This Role
The Principal Technician (Civil Works) at IST Islamabad is an EBPS-14 contract role open to candidates with a B.Tech (Pass) in Civil Technology (1st division, 05 years experience) or a DAE in Civil Technology (1st division, 09 years experience). Maximum age is 30 years. Selection may involve a practical assessment and interview at IST Islamabad campus. The four areas below reflect what IST evaluates when selecting a Principal Technician for civil maintenance and works supervision at its campus.
There are two qualification routes for this post. The B.Tech (Pass) route in Civil Technology requires 05 years of post-qualification experience, while the DAE in Civil Technology route requires 09 years. Ensure your experience certificates cover the full duration and clearly state the nature of civil works performed, the organization, and exact dates. The panel will verify that academic qualifications are from a Board of Technical Education or recognized polytechnic institute. For the B.Tech route, confirm your result is in 1st division (minimum 60% marks in annual system or CGPA 2.5/4.0 in semester system). For the DAE route, the same division criteria apply, and the 09-year experience must be clearly post-DAE. Collect attested copies of your degree/diploma, all transcripts from matric onwards, and experience certificates before applying.
Prepare a one-page experience summary listing each employer, your exact role in civil works (maintenance, construction, renovation, supervision, quality inspection), the scale of projects handled, and the period of employment. If your experience comes from multiple employers, ensure each certificate has the employer's letterhead, designation, period, and nature of duties.
The Principal Technician (Civil Works) is responsible for maintaining buildings, infrastructure, and facilities at an engineering university campus. Interview questions may cover: how to diagnose and fix common structural issues such as seepage, cracking, or plaster damage; how to plan and supervise a minor renovation or repair project from estimation to execution; how to coordinate with contractors, labourers, and vendors; and how to ensure construction quality. Be ready to explain measurement and estimation basics such as how to calculate material quantities for brickwork, plastering, flooring, or roofing using standard unit rates. Knowledge of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) standards and the CPWD schedule of rates is useful for a campus infrastructure role.
Prepare a brief example of a civil maintenance or repair job you supervised: the scope of the problem, the materials and manpower you organized, how you ensured quality and safety, and how you kept within budget and timeline. Concrete examples from real work experience are more persuasive than theoretical descriptions.
At the Principal Technician level, the panel may assess your ability to read civil drawings and extract dimensions, floor plans, or structural details for site work. Be prepared to explain how you would set out a building line from a site plan, read a section drawing to determine floor levels, or estimate quantities from a drawing. Construction site safety awareness is equally important: questions may cover how you would ensure workers follow safety protocols, use PPE, and manage the site during concurrent activities on a university campus with students nearby. Record-keeping skills including maintaining a works register, material receipt register, and daily progress records are standard expectations for a senior technician overseeing campus civil works.
If you have copies of drawings or work orders from past projects, review them before the interview to refresh your recall of how to interpret site plans. Even if you cannot bring them, being able to describe what a specific drawing type shows (plan, section, elevation, structural detail) demonstrates practical experience beyond classroom knowledge.

Send a completely filled and duly signed application form with: detailed updated CV, attested photocopies of all degrees/diplomas/transcripts/mark sheets from matric onwards, attested experience certificates (05 years for B.Tech route / 09 years for DAE route), CNIC, and a recent passport size photograph. If serving in a Govt./Semi-Govt./Autonomous body, include an NOC from your employer. Address the envelope to HR Department, Institute of Space Technology (IST), 1, Islamabad Highway, Islamabad.
