How to Prepare for This Role
The Research Associate position at LUMHS is a contract-based academic role requiring MPhil-level qualifications, peer-reviewed publications, and demonstrated research competency. The selection process involves document shortlisting followed by a test or interview. The four areas below focus on what the panel will assess most closely.
The ad requires at least two peer-reviewed publications in HEC-recognised W or X category journals. Before applying, confirm that your publications meet this requirement: check the HEC journal list to verify that each journal falls under the W or X category, and ensure you are either among the first three authors or the corresponding author. Bring printed copies of your publications to any interview. Be ready to describe the research question, methodology, findings, and your specific contribution to each paper. Candidates with W category publications or first/corresponding authorship will receive additional weightage, so clearly establish your author position in your application documents.
If you have any publications in W category journals, highlight these separately in your application. The selection process gives explicit additional weightage to W category publications and to first or corresponding authorship, so the panel will look for this information in your documents.
The ad requires working knowledge of at least one statistical software package from SPSS, STATA, or R. In the interview or written test, you may be assessed on your ability to conduct basic data analysis and interpret output independently. Be prepared to describe specific analyses you have performed: which software you used, the type of data, the statistical tests applied, and how you interpreted the results. If you have used the software in a published study or thesis, refer to that example directly. Prepare to explain common tests such as descriptive statistics, regression, t-tests, ANOVA, or any non-parametric equivalents relevant to your discipline, and be clear about which software you are most proficient in.
The ad specifically requires that candidates be capable of conducting analysis and interpreting output independently, not just running pre-set procedures. Be ready to demonstrate understanding of what results mean, not just how to produce them. If you have experience with more than one statistical software package, mention this as it demonstrates broader research competency.
The ad requires demonstrated familiarity with quantitative or qualitative research methodologies as appropriate to the relevant discipline. In the interview, be prepared to explain your research approach: whether your work is quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, and why that methodology was appropriate for your research questions. Describe your thesis or published research design in detail, including how you collected data, managed variables or themes, and ensured validity or trustworthiness of findings. For a health and biomedical research role at LUMHS, understanding clinical research methodology, ethical considerations in health research, and study design such as cohort, cross-sectional, or case-control studies may be directly relevant depending on your discipline.
Since LUMHS is a medical university, any experience with health sciences research, clinical data, or biomedical studies is directly relevant. Prepare to discuss how your MPhil or PhD research aligns with the LUMHS research mandate, and be ready to explain your discipline's connection to health or clinical sciences if the panel asks.
The ad requires sufficient written and spoken English to prepare research reports, correspondence, and manuscript drafts, and states that communication competency will be assessed at interview. Prepare to communicate clearly and professionally in English throughout the interview. Be ready to discuss your published papers, describe your research in plain language, and explain technical concepts to a panel. If you have drafted or co-drafted a research manuscript, describe your role in the writing process: literature review, methods section, results, or discussion. No minimum standardized test score is required, so the assessment will be based on how well you communicate during the interview itself rather than on a certificate.
