Qualification

Important Information / Application Guidelines
- All qualifications should only be from the Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education / Technical Education recognized by the Federal / Provincial / AJK Governments and well reputed universities / institutions recognized by the HEC, as applicable.
- First class in final degree is mandatory. Only one second class / division in the entire academic career from matric onwards is allowed. First class / division means a minimum of 60% marks for annual system or a minimum CGPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 for semester system. Second class / division means a minimum of 50% marks for annual system or a minimum CGPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 for semester system.
- No third division/class (marks less than 50% in annual system or CGPA less than 2.00/4.00 in semester system) in the entire academic career is allowed.
- All posts are Islamabad based. Practical Test/Interviews will be conducted at IST, Islamabad campus only.
- Applications with academic qualifications/degrees and experience in the relevant field will be considered only.
- Age will be calculated on the closing date of applications. Ex-Govt. officials / Ex-servicemen who fulfill the eligibility criteria may be granted age relaxation as per Govt. rules.
- Candidates selected will be offered an initial contract for a period of two (02) years (extendable).
- Ex-servicemen should also submit attested copy of NOC (mandatory) from General HQs / Air HQs / Naval HQs, as applicable.
- Ex-Govt. officials / Ex-servicemen should submit attested copies of their release/retirement order and Last Pay Certificate (LPC) duly verified from the concerned authority.
- Serving Employees of Govt. / Semi Govt. / Autonomous organizations should submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective organizations regarding permission to apply.
- Serving Regular Employees of Govt. / Semi Govt. / Autonomous organizations will not be appointed on deputation / EOL. In case of selection, the applicant will be required to tender resignation from regular service.

How to Prepare for This Role
The Technician-I / Lab Assistant at IST Islamabad is an EBPS-10 contract post open to fresh DAE graduates in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Technology, Information Technology, or Computer Information Technology (1st division). No post-qualification experience is required, making it ideal for recent graduates seeking an entry-level government-linked technical role at a leading engineering university. Four posts are available. Maximum age is 30 years. The four areas below reflect what IST evaluates in the practical test and interview for this lab support role.
The qualification requirement is a 03-year DAE from a recognized Polytechnic Institute in one of five disciplines: Electronics, Electrical, Computer Technology, Information Technology, or Computer Information Technology. Ensure the institution is recognized by the Federal or Provincial Board of Technical Education. The result must be in 1st division. Confirm your final year aggregate is at least 60% in the annual system. Collect attested copies of your DAE certificate, all year/semester mark sheets, and your matric certificate and mark sheet. No experience certificates are needed, but your academic documents must be complete and attested. Candidates whose qualification is in a related but different discipline (such as Instrumentation, Telecom, or Civil Technology) are not eligible. Only the five stated disciplines qualify.
Verify your Polytechnic is on the PBTE or FBTE recognized institution list before applying. If your result shows combined marks across all three years, calculate your aggregate percentage yourself to confirm it meets the 60% threshold for 1st division. Do not assume a pass result is also a 1st division result.
A practical test may be included as part of the selection process. Review the core technical subjects from your DAE discipline before attending. Electronics candidates should revise basic circuit theory, component identification (resistors, capacitors, transistors, ICs), multimeter usage, soldering, and circuit board reading. Electrical candidates should review AC/DC circuits, motor and generator basics, wiring and safety rules, and panel reading. Computer Technology, IT, or CIT candidates should revise hardware assembly and disassembly, basic networking concepts, PC troubleshooting, operating system installation, and cable crimping or connectivity tasks. IST laboratories support engineering education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, so the panel expects technicians to assist in setting up experiments and maintaining equipment with at least a foundational practical knowledge of their discipline.
Focus revision on hands-on practical tasks from your discipline rather than theoretical derivations. The Technician-I role is fundamentally practical: the panel is more interested in whether you can safely use test equipment, identify a faulty component, or set up a lab experiment than in whether you can derive a formula from memory.
Lab Assistant responsibilities at IST include setting up experiments before laboratory sessions, ensuring equipment is in working order, assisting students during lab sessions under faculty direction, maintaining calibration or maintenance logs, and safely storing chemicals, components, or materials. The panel may ask how you would respond to a lab safety incident, how you would maintain a basic inventory of lab consumables, how you would clean and store precision instruments, or how you would report a faulty or damaged equipment item. Demonstrating awareness of basic lab safety rules such as proper use of PPE, correct storage of electrical components, and safe handling of measurement instruments signals readiness for the role even without prior formal experience.
Think about the labs you used during your own DAE program. Describe what a technician in those labs did to support students, set up experiments, and maintain equipment. Your experience as a student in those labs is relevant background even if you have no formal work experience, and the panel will appreciate a candidate who has clearly observed and understood the technician's role during their training.
