Expert Tips
- Manual CNC programming is the key differentiator for this role. The job specifically requires manual programming capability — writing and editing G-code/M-code directly at the controller, not just loading programs generated by CAM software. State whether you are proficient on Fanuc, Siemens Sinumerik, Mitsubishi, or HAAS controllers, and describe the most complex program you have written manually, including the features machined (pockets, contours, threads, bore cycles).
- Name the CNC machine type and work envelope you have operated. For a Dies & Moulds manufacturer, a CNC Vertical Machining Center (VMC) or Horizontal Machining Center (HMC) with a large table and high-speed spindle is most relevant. If you have operated 4th or 5th axis CNC machines, this is a strong differentiator. State the make, model, and table size of the machines you have used.
- Die and mould component experience is the highest-priority preference. Candidates who have machined cavity plates, core inserts, ejector plates, lifters, sliders, or mould bases at tight tolerances (typically ±0.01 mm or better) will be prioritized above those with general CNC machining experience in other industries. Describe the tooling components you have machined, the materials used, and the tolerances maintained.
- Tool life management and cost-consciousness are valued at this level. The best CNC operators understand that tooling is a cost center. Describe any experience you have optimizing cutting parameters (spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut) to extend tool life while maintaining quality, reducing scrap, or improving cycle time. This kind of process ownership signals operator maturity beyond basic machine tending.
