Expert Tips
- Name the specific components you have machined. "Milling operator" is too generic a title. The difference between machining a die plate, cavity insert, ejector housing, gear housing, or structural bracket is significant for an employer manufacturing Dies & Moulds. Candidates who name the component families they have worked on, especially tooling-related parts, will stand out from those with general workshop experience.
- Hard material machining experience should be supported with material grades. If you have machined P20, H13, D2, SKD11, or EN series tool steels, name the grade. This demonstrates domain-specific knowledge that most milling operators trained primarily on mild steel or aluminum will not have. Tool steel machining at the tolerances needed for dies and moulds is a specialized skill.
- Instrument handling and keeping is explicitly listed. Treat it as a core competency. The hiring team wants someone who respects and properly maintains precision instruments. Your CV should reflect that you store gauges correctly, return them to calibration on schedule, and use them per procedure โ not just that you can take a measurement. Mention if you have been responsible for an instrument cabinet, gauge custody, or calibration records.
- Tool grinding knowledge should include cutting geometry and dress criteria. Simply saying you can grind tools is insufficient. Describe the rake angles, relief angles, and cutting edge conditions you have set for specific materials, and whether you have used bench grinders, tool post grinders, or surface grinders. Depth of knowledge here will be tested in the interview.
