Expert Tips
- This is a surgical RMO position, so your application must clearly demonstrate interest in and exposure to operating theatre environments. Unlike medical specialties, Urology at SIUT is heavily procedure-focused. During your house job, prioritize mentioning if you rotated through Surgery, General Surgery, or any surgical specialty. Describe the number of theatres you attended, the types of procedures you observed or assisted with, and your comfort with operating theatre protocols, sterile technique, and post-operative patient management. Candidates who demonstrate surgical theatre experience are significantly more competitive for this role.
- Emergency urology is a significant part of this RMO role — articulate your understanding of urological emergencies and your ability to recognize them clinically. SIUT's Urology Department manages acute presentations daily: retention of urine, urosepsis, testicular torsion, renal colic, and traumatic injuries. In your CV and interview, reference any house job exposure to emergency patients or acute presentations. Even if you haven't encountered these specific conditions, demonstrate that you understand how to assess an acutely unwell urological patient and when to escalate to senior doctors.
- Your PMDC registration, house job completion certificate, and any certifications in basic life support or emergency response should be front and center in your application. SIUT's Urology Department operates high-acuity surgical and medical emergencies. Having evidence of BLS certification or recent emergency medicine training strengthens your candidacy. Ensure your house job completion certificate is official and comprehensive, your PMDC registration is current, and all documents are legible and properly attested. Missing or incomplete documentation frequently results in rejection at the HR screening stage.
- Perioperative patient care — from pre-operative assessment through post-operative monitoring and discharge — is the core RMO competency in a surgical department. In your interview, demonstrate knowledge of pre-operative checklists (fasting status, medication timing, consent), intra-operative support (positioning, instrument handling, specimen management), and post-operative assessment (drain management, pain control, infection recognition, mobilization protocols). Candidates who show structured understanding of the surgical patient journey from admission through discharge are significantly more likely to be selected for this role.
