Expert Tips
- Your PALS and ACLS certifications must be current and from recognized providers — do not apply if either certificate is expired or due for renewal. These are non-negotiable mandatory requirements for a PICU Senior Medical Officer. SIUT will verify certification dates and issuing bodies during shortlisting. If your certifications are nearing expiration, renew them before submitting your application. Applicants with expired or unverifiable life support certifications are routinely rejected at the document screening stage, regardless of clinical experience.
- FCPS training in Paediatrics is the core credential and your training experience should be described with emphasis on critical care, emergency, and high-acuity exposure. Describe your FCPS rotations including hospitals, durations, and importantly, your experience in paediatric emergency, PICU, and high-dependency settings. Quantify if possible: case volumes managed per month, acuity levels handled, procedures performed or assisted with, and any research or publications from your training period. Candidates who can articulate strong FCPS training in critical care paediatrics are significantly more competitive.
- SIUT's PICU is not a general paediatric critical care unit — it manages complex children with renal, urological, and transplant complications as well as multi-system illness. Research and demonstrate in your application awareness of paediatric critical care in the context of nephrology and urology. Mention any prior exposure to critically ill transplant recipients, children with acute kidney injury, or paediatric patients with complex renal disease. Even if you have not managed these specific populations, show that you understand the overlap between critical care and nephrology/urology by referencing specific clinical scenarios or learning experiences.
- Leadership capability and the ability to function as a senior clinical decision-maker are key differentiators at this level. Unlike RMO positions, a Senior Medical Officer is expected to lead the PICU team in emergencies, mentor junior doctors, and support consultants in complex clinical decisions. In your CV and interview, describe specific examples where you have led a resuscitation, made a pivotal clinical decision under pressure, mentored junior staff, or improved a clinical process. SIUT seeks candidates who demonstrate maturity, clinical judgment, and leadership readiness, not just technical competence.
