About the Job
Institute of Space Technology (IST) Islamabad invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Director (Security & Safety) on a contract basis. The position is open to retired officers of the armed forces of the rank of Major or equivalent. IST is an Islamabad-based institution and all practical tests/interviews will be conducted at the IST Islamabad campus only. The initial contract period is two (02) years, extendable on performance basis.

Qualification

Important Information / Application Guidelines
- All qualifications should only be from the Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education / Technical Education recognized by the Federal / Provincial / AJK Governments and well reputed universities / institutions recognized by the HEC, as applicable.
- First class in final degree is mandatory. Only one second class / division in the entire academic career from matric onwards is allowed. First class / division means a minimum of 60% marks for annual system or a minimum CGPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 for semester system. Second class / division means a minimum of 50% marks for annual system or a minimum CGPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 for semester system.
- No third division/class (marks less than 50% in annual system or CGPA less than 2.00/4.00 in semester system) in the entire academic career is allowed.
- All posts are Islamabad based. Practical Test/Interviews will be conducted at IST, Islamabad campus only.
- Applications with academic qualifications/degrees and experience in the relevant field will be considered only.
- Age will be calculated on the closing date of applications. Ex-Govt. officials / Ex-servicemen who fulfill the eligibility criteria may be granted age relaxation as per Govt. rules.
- Candidates selected will be offered an initial contract for a period of two (02) years (extendable).
- Ex-servicemen should submit attested copy of NOC from General HQ / Air HQ / Naval HQ.
- Ex-Govt. officials / Ex-servicemen should submit attested copies of their release/retirement order and Last Pay Certificate (LPC) duly verified from the concerned authority.

How to Prepare for This Role
The Deputy Director (Security & Safety) position at IST Islamabad is an EBPS-18 contract role exclusively open to retired officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces at the rank of Major or equivalent, with 6 years of post-qualification experience and a maximum age of 40 years. Candidates with experience in security or safety in an institutional or campus environment will receive preference. This role requires leadership of IST's security and safety function across its Islamabad campus. The four areas below outline what the selection panel will assess most closely.
Eligibility is restricted to retired Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, or Pakistan Navy officers who held the rank of Major or equivalent (Squadron Leader in PAF, Lieutenant Commander in PN). Bring your original retirement/release order, your Pension Payment Order or Last Pay Certificate, and your service record summary. The panel will confirm your rank and retirement status. The 6-year post-qualification experience requirement means 6 years of relevant post-commission service or post-retirement work in security or safety management. Ensure your experience documentation clearly covers 6 years of security-related duties: as a regimental officer with a security-related posting, as a security officer in an institution, or in corporate/campus security management after retirement. The NOC from General HQ / Air HQ / Naval HQ is a mandatory document; applications without it will be considered incomplete.
The maximum age is 40 years calculated on the closing date (9th July 2026). Given that the rank of Major is typically attained after 10-12 years of service, confirm your age falls within the limit before applying. Ex-servicemen may be eligible for age relaxation per Govt. rules; mention this in your application if applicable.
IST is a sensitive public sector institution. The Deputy Director (Security & Safety) will be responsible for the overall security posture of the campus. Be prepared to discuss your approach to access control systems, gatekeeping and visitor management, guard deployment and rotation, CCTV and electronic surveillance management, perimeter security, and coordination with local law enforcement and security agencies. Describe your experience leading a security team: how you organized shift schedules, trained guards, conducted security audits, and handled security incidents or breaches. Experience managing security at an educational institution, government complex, or public sector organization will demonstrate the most direct fit for this role. IST hosts students, faculty, visiting dignitaries, and sensitive research activities, making layered security planning a key expectation.
IST's preference for candidates with experience in the relevant field means security or safety management experience in an institutional, academic, or high-value campus environment will carry the most weight. Highlight any postings or roles after retirement where you managed a security function for an educational institution, government building, or large public facility.
The role covers both security and safety functions. Be ready to describe your experience with fire safety protocols, emergency evacuation planning, first aid and emergency response coordination, occupational health and safety (OHS) compliance, and incident investigation and reporting. At IST, the safety function covers laboratory safety for science and engineering labs, electrical safety, chemical handling protocols, and general campus safety. If you have experience conducting fire drills, preparing emergency response plans, coordinating with Civil Defence or rescue services, or ensuring compliance with building safety codes, describe these activities in your interview. The panel will assess your ability to develop and implement a comprehensive safety management system tailored to an active university campus.
Prepare a concrete example of an emergency or security incident you managed: what happened, how you responded, what systems or protocols you activated, and what the outcome was. At Major level, the panel expects command-and-control experience rather than just supervisory observation. Frame your answer to demonstrate personal leadership of the response.
